Why use consultation and psychological supervision?
Consultation and psychological supervision can be invaluable in helping practitioners reflect on clinical presentations and relationship factors relating to casework or its impact, whether that’s on the individual or on other professionals, networks and organisations.
This service helps clinicians establish and maintain high standards of professional practice, supports their professional development, and provides oversight and guidance for clinical research and audit activities.
What is the difference between consultation and supervision?
Consultation and supervision differ in responsibility level. In supervision, the supervisor is ultimately responsible and has a ‘duty of care’ for the client. The supervisee is accountable to the supervisor for the quality of their clinical practice. In consultation, the responsibility and ‘duty of care’ remains with the practitioner. So, for example:
· Supervision: Dr Sleyster takes clinical responsibility.
· Consultation: You retain responsibility; focus is on support and reflection.
Professional consultation helps professional growth and development, and provides access to expert input on specific cases.
