Dr Esmoreit Sleyster, Ph.D., Consultant Clinical Psychologist,
is the founder and main service provider at Child Psychology Sussex.
Experience
Dr Sleyster, has 38 years’ experience working in the NHS, the private sector, and in private practice, where she has worked closely with Local Authorities, Education Authorities and Voluntary agencies. Dr Sleyster has worked with infants, children and young people experiencing a range of emotional, behavioural, social and mental health difficulties as a Clinical Psychologist in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) for nearly 28 years.
She also developed extensive expertise in working with children in care of the Local Authority who were placed in residential care and in specialist foster placements that operate as clinically supported ‘step-down’ placements, as the Lead Clinician. Additionally, Dr Sleyster offers consultation and training to teaching staff at SEMH Schools and other specialist education providers, and to Personal Assistants working with adults with enduring mental health problems in supported living accommodation.
Comprehensive support for children and families
Dr Sleyster works with infants, children and young people, who experience a range of emotional, behavioural, social, and mental health difficulties. Clinical Psychologists are trained to help people understand how their experiences, feelings and behaviours, have an effect on what they say and do. Child Psychology Sussex supports children, young people and their families or carers with difficult feelings, behaviours, situations and relationships. We can help you understand yourself and others better, think about alternative ways forward, manage behaviours and emotions more constructively, and support you cope with challenging situations and relationships.
Evidence-based therapies
Dr Sleyster’s work is informed by the belief in ‘potential for change’. To help children and adults overcome feeling stuck, and deal with setbacks and obstacles in their lives and relationships, Dr Sleyster uses techniques from Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioural and Dialectical Behaviour therapy, and often draws on Systemic, Psychodynamic and Attachment Theory based approaches, including Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and PACE. Dr Sleyster uses EMDR and the ‘Complex Resource Model’ to help children and adults address traumatic experiences.
Expert Witness in child and family assessments
Dr Sleyster has also worked as an independent Court Expert Witness, in which role she undertook psychological assessments of children; parenting assessments; and, with particular reference to attachments: assessments of children and families involved in care order applications, access disputes or residency disputes.Â
Leadership and expertise in clinical service development and training
Dr Sleyster has held a number of senior clinical and leadership positions in the NHS, with Outcomes First Group, and the National Fostering Group over time and developed expertise in service development, operational management, project management, audits, and in providing expert consultation and training to senior managers and staff groups. Furthermore, she has facilitated numerous training projects both in her work for the NHS, in the private sector, as well as in her private practice, where she has been commissioned as a Training Provider for West Sussex County Council since May 2008.
Qualifications and accreditations
Dr Sleyster obtained as Clinical Ph.D. in Child and Family Psychology at the Tavistock Clinic and Birkbeck College, University of London, in March 2002. Dr Sleyster obtained the Tavistock certificate in Executive Coaching, 2006, with The Tavistock Clinic, and uses her coaching and consultation skills to in a range of organisational settings. Dr Sleyster undertakes regular professional training, as required in order to remain registered with the professional bodies she belongs to.

As is legally required, Dr Sleyster is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This regulatory body was established to protect the public and is the statutory regulator for practitioner psychologists in the UK. Dr Sleyster has an Enhanced Certificate of the Disclosure & Barring Service (formerly CRB-check). Any associates working with Child Psychology will have had their enhanced DBS checked by Dr Sleyster.
Dr Sleyster is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which means she subscribes to certain measures to protect client confidentiality. Our GDPR policy will be send to all clients by email when the first appointment with Child Psychology Sussex has been agreed upon.
Dr Sleyster is a member of the Association of Child Psychologists in Private Practice (AChiPPP) and is registered with several health insurance companies as a provider of psychological or therapeutic services.
